How to teach kids Hindi in 10 steps
Motivation, Motivation, Motivation
It's extremely important that kids have motivation to learn Hindi. How
to increase their motivation is not as difficult as you might think. You
can simply do the following
1- Rewards
Offer them rewards for learning extra words or phrases (e.g. a chocolate
bar from Hindi, a trip to a Hindi restaurant, or his/her favorite
place, such as zoo, museum, playground or an amusement park)
2- Surprises
Especially for small children, including infants and toddlers, surprises
are proven to increase motivation. If you play surprising games your
child will be able to keep paying attention to the program.
3- Fun & Games
Playing games like hide and seek by counting in Hindi, online memory
or matching games or puzzles, and cardboard games will do the trick.
4- Keep it short and simple
Not only adults but also children automatically lose interest if what
they are asked to do is difficult. When you ask them to learn only a few Hindi words at a time, they will find the task more enjoyable and
increase their confidence in learning Hindi.
Practice, Practice, Practice
Practice makes it perfect the old saying goes. If your child has no
opportunity to practice what he/she learned, you can make sure that all
the efforts are in vain.
5- Flash cards & posters
Flash cards might sound like an old school method but they are very
effective. Similar to Dino Lingo motion images, how flash cards work is
very simple: they create object-sign associations in your child's brain
after a short period of exposure. You can use Dino Lingo flash cards or
make your own flash cards and practice with your child.
6- Cartoons
Children love watching cartoons. You can find tons of Hindi cartoons
available online also Dino Lingo Hindi program has perfect combination
of cartoons.
7- Story books
If your child knows some Hindi, you can purchase Hindi story books
on the internet. If he/she doesn't know how to speak Hindi, you can
read fairy tales by replacing some words with Hindi words.
8 - Music & songs
Music is universal, and you can find many Hindi songs available online
and in supermarkets. It is also not a bad idea to buy some Hindi
children's song CD and play it in the car or at home as background
music. Studies have shown that even background music can increase
children's vocabulary.
9- Talking with native speakers
One of the best ways of practicing Hindi is giving your child
opportunities to interact with Hindi native speakers. It would also be
a fun family activity to visit a place where Hindi is spoken such as a Hindi restaurant, supermarket, cultural center, school, community
center etc.
10- Test & quiz
You can speak to your child in Hindi if you know how to speak Hindi.
If you don't know how to speak Hindi, you can still ask questions
like "what is "this" in Hindi?" by showing an object. If you know a
few words in Hindi, you can show him/her two objects and ask "which
one is "…". Kids also love drawing things, you can also play with your
children and ask them to draw objects by calling object names in Hindi, like; "can you draw me a …?".
Summary: Kids love watching Dino Lingo DVDs regularly and play Dino
Lingo online games. Visit places where Hindi is spoken. Play with fun
educational stuff like Hindi jigsaw puzzles and Hindi toys. Don't
forget the posters (Hindi alphabet, sight words, flag, map). Interact
with other kids who can speak Hindi or studying together with someone
with whom they can practice Hindi. |
